Yes, maybe it'd just taken me almost two hours to get home from work.
Yes, maybe some of that was spent crawling at 5 mph up a big hill while avoiding other cars spinning their tires, desperately seeking traction.
Yes, maybe my three kids were in the car.
But I was not about to miss out on this golden opportunity for hoonage.
My littlest only put up with a few minutes of Daddy's fun, but after all the family fell asleep, I snuck out for another session (this place is just south of my neighborhood).
Today, I'm thankful for my winter set (Conti DWS), traction control, and a gentle throttle setting. Also thankful for big, empty parking lots and the button that turns DSC off!

Damnit that looks like fun! Didn't quite snow enough where I am so I couldn't hoon tonight. I'm hoping we get slammed by terrible weather tomorrow so I can go full oppo on my way into work in the morning!

Yessir. Take a look at my hood in the first pic, and you might be able to guess it.

e90 m3?

the hood is telling me E92 but the speedo and tach say otherwise

DING!
An '08 - got it in the summer of '12, but last year's winter was super mild. First chance I've gotten to play around with it like this!
Might have to wake up early and go back...

It was perfect. Enough traction to not worry about getting stuck, but slippery enough for lots of tire-friendly sideways action. Looks like we'll be getting snow tomorrow - hopefully enough to take the kiddos sledding!

You're so lucky

Definitely a dream come true for me...
Had a Mazda 3s hatch for seven years prior - I think I even surprised myself when I actually bought the M3... It was 30% more than I was planning to spend on a car, but I test drove it anyway, and was pretty much ruined after that. Sold some stock to get it, and have been loving every minute in it ever since. Zero regrets.

I'm trying to convince my dad to keep his e39 m5 until I can buy it from him, its a dream car of mine. Now I have a 99 grand cherokee which is awesome but not even close to being on the same level as the m5

I nearly went for M5 like your dad's instead of the E90. Such a classic design, and an all-time epic car. Hope I eventually get to at least drive one.
Good luck convincing him! What do you think it's worth now?

His has 100,000 miles on it but is amazing condition. Prices on e39s are all over the place so I guess anywhere from 15 to 20 but I'm not certain

Make. It. Happen.

Trust me I'm trying. I can't afford a 15-20k car anytime soon but I'm hoping I can get some sort of family discount

I am DYING for it to snow so I can do this. Yesterday it was 60 degrees. Wtf, weather!?
Cool vid btw! I just did my very first test with a headrest mount last night and I am thrilled with the results. Going to be awesome at the track...especially if I can figure out how to overlay GPS data from Harry's lap timer.
Do you normally turn your idrive screen off? I don't think I ever have, although I knew it was possible.

I got just a dusting Thurs morning and my summer tires are not worth a shit with 1/4 inch of snow on the ground. I ordered my winter tires today lol.

Ha! Thanks - hope you get some soon.
What headrest mount did you get? I need to go ahead and get Harry's, too.
I just turned it off for the video - figured it would be annoying. What is annoying is that it doesn't actually turn off, it just goes black (or as black as an LCD screen can go).

Yeah I noticed it doesn't go "off" - the one on my old idrive (2007 335) did go the whole way off I'm pretty sure. They must've changed it.
I have the cruisecam headrest mount. They're $50 from the website I think, but you can sometimes find them used on the forum. I got this one from a friend for $30 so I went for it. Another friend of mine made his own headrest mount and used it at the track in October - it worked perfectly and I think he had like $10 into the parts.

I think I'll have to try the DIY first - thanks for the tip.
Had to republish this over at M3post, too.

Add your video once you get some of the white stuff!

About time! Hope they get in quickly for you.
There was an old yellow Boxster spinning furiously trying to get up the hill south of my office. I wonder if he (she?) also made the mistake of getting caught out on summer tires.

Payment plan. Take it out of my inheritance. Hard labor. Whatever it takes!

Let me know if you need help with the DIY. My friend is on e90post and I'm sure he'd tell you exactly what he used if you want to shoot him a PM.
You KNOW I cant wait to post some snowhoon video =)

Thanks - give him my screen name if you think he wouldn't mind sharing the details.
Maybe you'll have to take your sprinkler to a big parking lot for some wet skidpad action to tide you over - ha!

I passed it along. You should hear from him eventually. If not give me a shout.
Edit: about the sprinkler - it's raining here today and I've been sliding around as much as MDM will let me. I don't like to risk DSC full off on the street. No parking lot donuts though, don't want to chew up the snows too much before we get a healthy dusting.

Thanks. I'm the same with DSC on the street - I haven't been brave enough to kill it off at the track yet, either!

OR... doesn't know the difference between summer/winter tires or thinks it's some kind of joke.
I pulled up next to another car exactly like mine at a gas station one day and the lady driving it told me she was going to trade it in in the fall because it did not get around at all in the snow. I looked down at her tires... Same as mine, summer tires. I told her she should try some all season or winter tires on it this year considering those were not made for snow. She probably thought I was pulling her leg or something although I was just trying to be helpful.

Manufacturers (and used car dealers) who sell cars with summer times mounted probably should do a better job of explaining the difference, maybe add the chart of stopping distances in different temperatures and conditions in the glovebox...
